And that’s just the start of our thorough annual visits when we check things that may be visible if you’re looking closely. But that happens less and less as children get older and privacy is increasingly important.

A check of things you cannot see is critical to your child’s health now and in the future.

Did a heart issue develop that may surface only after your child has an acute episode? Anemia isn’t something you can see but we’ll make sure to check that out. And with cholesterol levels a predictor of illness that can be prevented, that is also monitored at well visits.

What about hearing and vision? We pick up eye abnormalities early so that they can be addressed before the child’s learning is impaired. When it comes to hearing, sometimes it’s hard to recognize when your hearing isn’t optimal. We assess that year to year too.

Equally important to monitoring physical wellbeing is our focus on mental health, including social/emotional and educational success. Parents know firsthand how stressful navigating school, peers, and home can be for their children. It’s not uncommon for a conversation to begin at a well visit about stressors and concerns, that in turn allows us to provide resources to keep kids on track for success.
